Why We Can’t Wait: Conference to Eliminate Health Disparities in Genomic Medicine
The ultimate outcome of the Human Genome Project will be to revolutionize medicine by improving disease prediction, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. However, its success relies on participation from diverse populations in all research and clinical aspects of medicine. Populations that participate in genetic research and who are aware of and receptive to resulting technologies will be the ones to benefit most. Populations which do not participate will be at a significant disadvantage when research is translated into clinical practice.
The time is now to unify research, clinician, and community groups throughout the United States and abroad to formally acknowledge and address the impact of genomic medicine on health disparities.
