Participation

Participation is fun, easy and voluntary. All participants will have ongoing encouragement from trainers and Wellness Center staff, along with weekly emails that will provide nutritional counseling, exercise tips, and study milestones.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

UM faculty and staff
Spouses and domestic partners
Individuals not working at UM
Individuals 18 and older***

***Participants 65 years and older will perform cardiovascular exercise on a recumbent bicycle rather than a treadmill.

WHAT DOES PARTICIPATION INVOLVE?

Participation is voluntary and will take place at the Medical Wellness Center. All information is confidential and participation will not affect your health care. All participants are asked to agree to the following:

  • Read and sign a consent form
  • Participate in individual fitness assessments
  • Participate in family and medical history interview
  • Provide a blood sample for lipid profile and genetic analysis
  • Complete basic demographic and risk factor forms
  • Complete exercise log books (updated with new goals by your personal trainer)

All participants must become members of the Medical Wellness Center for the 12 week duration of the study.*

  • The monthly cost of the Wellness Center is:
  • UM Employees $45
  • University Alumni $50
  • University Retiree $50
  • Non-UM affiliated member $60

All Alumni, Retirees and Non-UM affiliated who complete the 3 month exercise program will receive an adjusted monthly rate of $45.00 For example, an alumni would receive a $15 reimbursement check, and community member would receive a $45.00 reimbursement check at the end of the 3 month period. Also, the Wellness Center will lower the monthly fee from $60.00 to $50.00 for community members who complete GEAR.
