New Grants Expand Miller School Researchers’ Pursuit of Genetic Connections to Alzheimer’s

Researchers from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics have been awarded two new contracts from the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health. These newly awarded contracts are part of a global initiative to detect genetic factors associated with Alzheimer’s disease risk in an effort to identify new targets for drug development.

Miller School Researchers Identify Gene Essential to Normal Inner Ear Development

A Miller School of Medicine research team led by Mustafa Tekin, M.D., a professor in the Dr. John T. MacDonald Foundation Department of Human Genetics who has been exploring the genetics of deafness for more than a decade, has discovered a previously unrecognized gene, ROR1 (receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 1), that is essential for the development of the inner ear and hearing in humans and mice.
