Miller School and Collaborators to Receive up to $30.2 Million for Alzheimer’s Research

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and collaborators have been selected to receive awards totaling up to $30.2 million in grant funding for Alzheimer’s disease research. The awards include a grant expected to total $22.7 million over five years and a second grant for $7.5 million. Both awards were given by the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health.

On August 3, The American Journal of Human Genetics published the American Society for Human Genetics’ policy statement on germline gene editing in humans. Representing the Miller School on the task force was Rosario Isasi, J.D., M.P.H., a bioethicist and lawyer whose work focuses on the regulation of human genetic technologies. Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Opens Samuel & Ethel Balkan Pediatric Glaucoma Center

Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, part of UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, has opened the Samuel & Ethel Balkan International Pediatric Glaucoma Center, the world’s first integrated services center dedicated to helping infants and children with glaucoma, a blinding condition associated with high pressure within the eye that damages the optic nerve that carries signals from the eye to the brain.
